Helping in Haiti!
This picture is from the United Nations Development Programme (via Flickr)
Ok readers, I'm sure you've all heard the stories, watched the tragedies unfold, and hopefully you've considered how you can help those suffering in Haiti. My plan is to make an initial donation of $25 here: LDS Emergency Response The link to donate is at the bottom of the article.
Below is a list that CNN put together of organizations that are collecting money for the Haitian relief efforts:
CNN list of Haiti relief organizations
You can also simply text any of these options below and the charge will be added to your cell phone bill and donated that way:
Red Cross: Text HAITI to 90999 ($10 donation)
Yéle Haiti: Text YELE to 501501 ($5 donation)
United Way: Text HAITI to 864833 ($5 donation)
Intl Medical Corps: Text HAITI to 85944 ($10 donation)
As you can imagine, money is the greatest need right now, so there are few organizations that are collecting supplies. However, one organization that I know is collecting supplies is the LDS Humanitarian Relief Fund. Yes, this is a religious organization, however, they constantly provide humanitarian aid and disaster relief without any religious bias. Their recent humanitarian activities can be viewed by region HERE.
They welcome these SUPPLIES
Or, you can put together HYGIENE KITS
If you live near a Deseret Industries store, supplies can be dropped off there. IF not, they can be mailed to the LDS Humanitarian Center:
Latter-day Saint Humanitarian Center
1665 Bennett Road
Salt Lake City, UT 84104
I will be putting together a box of supplies out of what I have on hand, so if you are local (Colorado Springs) and would like to drop off items for a shipment to the humanitarian center, please e-mail me at firstname.lastname@example.org or leave a comment with your email address and I will coordinate with you to get the supplies to add to the shipment I send, and a list of all contributors will be included.
Whether you donate money, donate supplies, or say a prayer for the people of Haiti, I hope that you will consider contributing in some way! If you choose to blog about your plans, please go link up at Money Saving Mom, and she and her husband will personally donate $10 for every link up to Compassion's Outreach in Haiti. Isn't that AWESOME?! Let's all unite and make a BIG difference for the people of Haiti! Please leave a comment and let us all know what you're doing - no matter how big or small, together we'll make a huge difference!!
